Folsom, California (perhaps most well-known globally for the Johnny Cash concert held at Folsom in the song of the same name) is a city in Sacramento County with a population just over 75,000 according to the most recent census.

Originally known as Granite City, a major mining operation and base camp for those afflicted with gold fever in the 1800s, Folsom was almost entirely occupied by gold miners hunting for their fortune out in the Sierra Nevada foothills up until the early 1900’s.

Folsom Prison was created in 1880 as a joint agreement between the Livermore family and the state of California. The Livermore family donated the land for the prison to be built, and in return they got to use prison labor to build a hydroelectric dam on the American River. The dam plan eventually fell through, but Folsom Prison continues to be operational even today.

Like most other large cities in America (and throughout the rest of the world, for that matter), Folsom sees its fair share of speeding. Unlike a lot of other large cities, however, most of the speeding, traffic accidents, and traffic incidents occur on just a few roadways in city limits – with US 50 and Empire Ranch Road being the most afflicted roads in Folsom.

According to the Office of Traffic Safety, in 2015, three hundred and eighty-eight individuals were reported to have been killed or injured in accidents that happen on Folsom roads. Nineteen of those injuries or fatalities involved motorcycles, twenty two of those injuries or fatalities involved bicycles, and six of those injuries or fatalities involved bicyclists under the age of 15 years old.

Speeding is a big problem in Folsom, with 122 of those fatalities and injuries we highlighted above stemming from accidents where speeding was considered a major contributing factor. Twenty-Seven incidents occurred during the nighttime hours between 9 PM and 3 AM, and seven hit and run accidents were reported in 2015.  A hit and run fatality was just reported in September 2015, occurring at the intersection of East Bidwell and Oak Avenue. A suspect was arrested, but the individual has yet to have had his day in court and the case remains open.

It’s important to keep your wits about you whenever traveling some of the more heavily trafficked or congested roadways and highways in Folsom, but it’s just as important to have a quality personal injury lawyer on your side, should one of these accidents unfortunately occur. These kinds of situations happen quite frequently in Folsom (with more than one person per day on average reporting in injury or a fatality according to the stats we highlighted above), and it’s of the utmost importance that you protect yourself and your loved ones as best you can with quality representation you can depend on.
